I could ignore the software phoning home to tell SunCom what your'e listening to. I could live with the FAQs saying that it didn't collect personal information. I coudl live with the drivers remaining on teh system even afte ran uninstall. I could (almost, okay, not really) live with them not giving you a choice once you put hte CD in and installing even if oyu decline their ULA.

...Okay, no, that shit sends me up the wall too.

The world is a business, Mr. Beale.

It has been since man crawled out of the slime.
Am I a hero? I really can't say. But, yes.

On that topic. At my job, one concept, one goal is valued above all others, and you hear it every day, in every conceivable context. It is called:

"Monetizing the customer."

It is called, taking the human, and turning him into as much money as possible. Monetizing him. Monetizing us.

And that's all anyone out there is trying to do. Monetize you.

The world is a business.
Am I a hero? I really can't say. But, yes.

The most desperate waiter I've ever encountered was at ESPNZone on Sunday.

ESPN... the Worldwide Leader in sports. Correct me if I'm wrong, but they haven't even gone public.

This waiter was an early 90s adventure game for the PC and by that I mean he was RELENTLESS. Appetizers? He asked us three times if we wanted any. If we wanted soups or salads with our entrees. If we wanted as much liquor as humanly possible with our meals. Desserts. Post-dinner appetizers. At the end of it, when we got the fucking desserts he wanted to know if we wanted to buy any mugs or t-shirts. Jesus Christ, man!

He wanted to "monetize the customers."

I don't have a problem with trying to squeeze every last penny out of the customer, I just hate it when it's so transparent and desperate. You know how you're expected to haggle at a bazaar in the Middle East? Me neither, but you know how Western film depicts middle eastern bazaars as a place where they expect you to haggle? I expect businesses in America to not be so goddamn desperate. It's fucking disgusting. Am I ever going to go back to ESPNZone? No, because I don't want to feel like the staff is seconds away from simply jumping for my wallet.

I've upped my MP3 downloading by a million per cent recently. That finally did it. I became Knuckles. I will no longer pay for music. Under any circumstances, except when I am giving it as a gift or actually at a concert, drunk, and loose with my billfold.

December 6th, 2005. Mark it down. Music is no longer worth paying for. Jesus Fuck, burn the wav files to the CD, cram in the lyrics and make the jewel case plastic. All for $20. How fucking difficult is that.

Sorry but due to the popularity of the MP3s being downloaded we've been incurring excess bandwidth charges every month, which were costing us quite a bit, so I've taken an executive decision and scrapped the mp3 page.

I suggest you just go and take a look at the filesharing sites, there's plenty of stuff on there, and if you like it go out and buy it or catch us next time we roll thro your town. latest release to look for are Citizen Fish, Life Size (on Honest Dons) and Subhumans Live in a Dive (on Fat Wreck.)

thanks for your support

cheers,

phil.
I think all of you are listening to the wrong music. Not only do my bands not give a shit if I swipe their music, they ask me to do it!

Also, ICJ, didn't you recently get yourself banned from the best music torrent site ever during a Caltrops hivemind episode?

Yeah, but it was inevitable. I knew it was coming. I sucked down about a gig of music and I think that what I sent back to the torrents through uploading was 250MB. Again, it was explained very well that leechers HELP bit torrent communities. The people trying to establish ratios on bit torrents and/or keep it exclusive are the dumbest fucking people currently on the Internet. (You know all this already, Worm, I'm just rabble rousing the crowd, now.) Someone goes and creates a method of file distribution where leechers are useful... and people out there are still demonstrating petty stupidity.

Yeah, when you can go and simply request something like INDK - Kill Whitey or Drecyxia - The Quest and get in about a day, it's worth it. I realize you think you're Thoreau here, but fuck man, e-civil disobedience is just gay. For the best music torrent site ever, I'll deal with pompous idiots. Whatever man, you just keep in that untouchable moral ray of light with shitty 96 kbps mp3s.

What? Does Soulseek not exist in Forty Fort? Dude, I haven't been lacking for anything. I tell it what CDs I want before I go to bed and they have been downloaded by the morning. If the music you get is that of a Pop-40 Pussy then why not simply get it and avoid egos of people who have literally nothing else going on in their lives (like the dumbfucks who run "Oink")?

Look, I'd download the thing and not find the stupid hard to find shit I want. Or we can just both agree that if you're not looking for Scott Staph soulseek isn't so great.

Futhermore, maintaining a ratio isn't that hard. It takes just as much work to keep it at .4 as it does to keep it around 1, just heat up your frontal lobe and transfer the work you put into determining if you're getting garbage off soulseek into leaving a few popular downloads running a little while. If you had used a half decent music service in the first place maybe you wouldn't have made everyone think that one coldplay(or whatever) song wasn't all refrain a few months(years?) back.

I'm really starting to get more heavily into Bit Torrent (I downloaded both the new SOAD and two a Perfect Circle albums, as well as getting all my This Week in Tech podcasts from there) so could you expound on this? Also, I'm always getting like 10 or 11 KBPS (at the most) from this university's fucking t1 connection. The hell is up with that? I use Bit Comet, is there a reason why I shouldn't?

Unless you can get the people at your university to open up ports for warezing, you're going to have problems with everything.

Yeah, see, I can do all my IMing jsut fine and shit, and every once in a great while I'll get super-fast downloads like I should. But for some damn reason it jsut doesnt' work with Bit Torrent most of the time. I mean, if it was blocked I'd jsut get 0/0KBPS, right? The fact taht I can get more than that has me confused.

The ports allow you connect to the tracker better. It doesn't necessarly mean you're blocked, but it effects your download/upload rates.

You would download the thing and not find it? With an attitude like that, no wonder music isn't revealing itself to you!

Futhermore, maintaining a ratio isn't that hard.
I'm not saying it's akin to working over the rock pile, it's just that I honestly can't be bothered. When I see a completed Torrent I click it off.

Granted, this was before Azeasyysus or whatever the fuck it's called. It took 6 years, but a decent Torrent client was finally developed that didn't have a window open for each live Torrent.

...Leaving a few popular downloads running a little while.
This is the part I have a problem with. To satisfy the egos of some little worthless fucks, I have to download "Jenny on the Block" and leave it open. Man... fuck that shit.

If you had used a half decent music service in the first place maybe you wouldn't have made everyone think that one coldplay(or whatever) song wasn't all refrain a few months(years?) back.
That wasn't an Internet-only remix. That was what they PLAYED on the radio. It was on the album. It was 3rd Eye Blind. "When I See You," if I remember right.

What's the problem?

I recommended "ABC" years ago (well, at least a year ago) for BitTorrent use.

One window for all your torrents, you can cap your upload speed so your downloads don't get choked, and you can tell it to keep seeding after completion for either a period of time or until you've uploaded a certain amount or until you're uploaded a certain percentage.

Mine's configured to upload at a max of 25 (30?) kbps, and to seed until the upload reaches 125%.

Jonsey, I don't see how you are able to always find the WORST software to use. One that opens new windows for each torrent? I'd just slit my wrists and be done with it.

The thing here refers to the client, 'shit I want' is music. Wormanese only exists in your mind, shithead.

Futhermore, maintaining a ratio isn't that hard.

Yeah, so shut your mouth? This is really weird, you bitch about something based on how it used to be. Not to mention JQW was reccomending a client BEFORE bitorrent existed or some silly shit.

I didn't say popular downloads of popular songs. I'm probably still running on ratio from when I seeded "The Vandals - Christmas with the Vandals 'Oi! To the world'". Why don't you up Hall and Oates rather than parroting a retard you know from the Internet?

If you had used a half decent music service in the first place maybe you wouldn't have made everyone think that one coldplay(or whatever) song wasn't all refrain a few months(years?) back.

No, it really WAS NOT what was played on the radio. You posted an MP3 which had the normal song intro and looped a 5 second refrain for the rest of the entire song. After awhile you found the real song, which was horrible, but believably horrible. I cannot find the thread, because you're a commie.

You still said "I would," implying that you'd do it in the future, numbnuts.

Yeah, so shut your mouth? This is really weird, you bitch about something based on how it used to be. Not to mention JQW was reccomending a client BEFORE bitorrent existed or some silly shit.
JQW has requirements for software that are usually the complete opposite of mine. For instance, I don't have any patience for browser windows loading, so I use IE. I also hate "tabbed" browsing. He has time to kill and loves "fagged" browsing. So you can see how we'd differ. I'll deal with him down below.

I didn't say popular downloads of popular songs. I'm probably still running on ratio from when I seeded "The Vandals - Christmas with the Vandals 'Oi! To the world'". Why don't you up Hall and Oates rather than parroting a retard you know from the Internet?
I love how *I'm* the one parroting here, in a conversation I was an active member of on a different website. NOBODY ELSE WANTED the shit I was grabbing from Oink. Christ man, I'm not a monster. I didn't sit there with a lone digit over the left trackball button, just waiting to disconnect the exact instant the last byte made it to my computer. But nobody wanted anything from "Rabbitt" or "Depeche Mode" or whoever else I grabbed. They didn't want it and your suggestion is apparently for me to:

1) Keep it up indefinitely
2) Go grab shit I don't want, but is "popular" so I can maintain a ratio

And all the work I did helping other people's ratios is just forgotten.

Man, you're a goddamn retard. This isn't putting shit up on an FTP. The Bit Torrent Guy, Graham Torrent, found a solution that used people like me to his advantage. I don't like having my network "open" -- call it OCD or stupidity or whatever you want. I want my behavior (download and run) to not change. Graham made it so that my behavior HELPS other people, which is genius. In doing so, he conclusively proved that people who care about ratios are dumbfucks and if you care about them, Worm, you're as stupid as the retards running Oink.

That wasn't an Internet-only remix. That was what they PLAYED on the radio. It was on the album. It was 3rd Eye Blind. "When I See You," if I remember right.

What? I heard it on the radio, in Longmont, Colorado, on the way to the Burrito Kitchens for lunch. If you find the thread you'll realize that I expressed my incredulation because it WAS on the radio. I am familiar with the concept of the "remix." This, please, cannot be that.

I recommended "ABC" years ago (well, at least a year ago) for BitTorrent use.
You shut the fuck up and die screaming, nobody cares about what gayass Torrent solution you use because you're more biased than Len Bias in a Prejudice Contest.

Mine's configured to upload at a max of 25 (30?) kbps, and to seed until the upload reaches 125%. Jonsey, I don't see how you are able to always find the WORST software to use. One that opens new windows for each torrent? I'd just slit my wrists and be done with it.
Again, your ability to half-read the shit out of things dooms you. If I am setting a torrent to go to 125% when I am the last person to jump onto content that people don't want anyway then the thing will be "up" for an INFINITE amount of time.

I don't think I've adequately expressed how much I hate waiting for shit to load on the Internet. I can't stand it. I don't want ANY of my network's resources going to seed Torrents -- I'll seed when I'm on and that's that.

Needless to say, I usually use Usenet.
