Infocom Sales Figures

Post by Ice Cream Jonsey »

Archivist and all-around good guy Jason Scott got the goods! LOOK AT THIS SHIT! He got a hold of Infocom sales figures for 1981-1986. Did you know:

- That Zork 1 sold 378,987 copies?
- That Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy sold 254,249 copies?
- That poor Ballyhoo sold only 23,912 copies?

Well, now you do.

378,000 Zorks. I am not giving up finding a mint-in-box one just yet, and I'm sure as shit not paying more than ten bucks for it either, seeing how goddamn many of them are out there.

Im sure there were plenty of disapointed kids during the Christmas of 80- whatever, who got a video game without graphics and decided to just not open the box. FIND THEM!
the last group complained, quite tellingly They said, "Why don't you have a spoon that just says 'Earth?' It would save time

Christ, if you posted twice then it means that, probably, the site isn't working correctly. Argh!

Ballyhoo was one of the first Infocom games I got (firsthand). That and Lurking Horror. Good times.

Ben: Here?

Please don't interrupt

Ben: I didn't know that.

Star Lasers for the TRS-80 Color Computer sold 43 copies in 1974

Ben: "Damn." - Star Lasers developers

ICJ: "If we sell our pants we can survive through Jan 1975" - Star Lasers devs

Ben: "I knew we shoulda done AMPERSAND LASERS!!" - sld still in training

Ben: SPACE LASERS

ICJ: Haha

I don't remember what computer system it was released for, but there's a game called Wheeler Dealers that is so obscure it doesn't have a MobyGames entry. It sold fifty copies total.

When I sold out the last (fifteth) copy of ND, I felt like Will Wright after he heard the Sims broke 13 million.

But still, Wheeler Dealer? That's not a horrible name. I would expect a low-selling game of that era to be called something like SPINNAKER'S MOLESTING FUN (c).

I think I remember reading that it had the smallest number of rooms of any Infocom game (something like 34).

As I remember it wasn't all that big, gamewise. There were a lot of puzzles in the same room. Like that maddening sequence with the babel fish.

That question can be taken TWO ways, so let's tackle 'em both! Because... what the hell else is going on 'round these parts this weekend.

Do I count them as in, do I count the number of rooms as I play a text game?

The answer is no! A game may have two rooms or two thousand and its quality has no bearing on either, so I don't bother keeping track.

Do I count rooms as towards the qual-- shit, I already answered this above, er

Too lazy to edit this post, I'll just reiterate what was previously said!

(... That being said, that was the only Fun Fact I could remember about HHGG, so I ran with it.)
