I have questions.

1) How old was this guy?
2) He was the heir to the NICK TAHOU fortune, right?
3) Why on earth did he change the name of the place, anyway?
4) What locations of his are still open? Did they shut the one downtown down? I know you have mentioned having Tahou's for dinner on Facebook... do you go to the one on Lyell (sp?) Ave?

To the best of my knowledge. (Which means that I haven't had the time to really research, but did look into these)

1] He was between 40 and 50 and weighed in between 250 and 300 lbs.

2] He was Nick's nephew. I wouldn't consider the proceeds from Tahou's a fortune, but I bet he was able to buy a new car.

3] The name Tahou and the menu item name 'Garbage Plate' are both copyrighted. He bought the franchise (recipes and trade names) but not the Tahou name. The original sign out front read "Stevie T's Hots and Potatoes Owned and operated by Steve Tahou and family" that lasted about a week before the lawyers made him remove the name Tahou. Like Walter S. Taylor of Bully Hill winery fame, he cannot use his own name for trade. I don't know if Nick's wife refused to sell him the name or he just didn't think he needed to buy it, either way I guess it can't appear on a permanent sign on the premises. I think it's on a hand lettered sign in the window last time I stopped in.

4] The one downtown is still open but I haven't been there in YEARS. I am strictly a Lyell Ave. customer as it's only 10 minutes from my house. Last time we went downtown they had a city cop between the doors, keeping the peace. My friend (drunk) got into an argument with another patron (also drunk) and the cop broke it up. My friend told the cop, "This ain't your business, chink!" (the officer was of Oriental descent)

He spent the next 24 hours in the drunk tank. I walked home.

Well, racial epithets aside... WAS it any of the cop's business?

To the extent of 'keeping the peace', yes.

Did the cop give a crap about who was in line first? No.

I haven't been to the downtown Tahoes in like 10 years. A group of friends and I had reservations at Spagetti Warehouse on New Years Eve, which they promptly lost, so we went to Tahoes, all dressed up, at like 9pm and ate Garbage plates with the Pimps and Hookers and Junkies Oh my!

It was an experience!

I want to go back to the Spaghetti Warehouse! I miss that place! Coolest bar in the city and they only let you have two drinks... all you want when you get a table tho.

It's 'tilt' niteclub now. one of the best restaurants in ROC turned into one of the best clubs in ROC - except for the gay nights, natch.

They used to have the stagecoach that Lincoln was shot in.. we usually opted for a "bed" table though.
