Nice, but I'll only really visit if there's something wrong with the siteop. There's a rumor going round that he was a quadriplegic?

Why can't we just have nice things? This is why we can't have nice things.

Ben and I did a real interview with a real person making a real 4x game:

Predestination has a Kickstarter and I don't mind posting the link to that, either:

Oh, while I'm here, what is the significance of '4x' gamer and what are '4x' games? I'll listen off-line.

The four Xs stand for the four general phases of the game eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate:

1. eXplore: You generally begin in an unknown world/universe, and have to send out scouting units to figure out where you're at.

2. eXpand: Once you got a handle on that, you start broadening your scope of influence by building new cities/colonizing new planets, etc.

3. eXploit: With the resources gained from such expansion, you can research new technologies, increase production and efficiency, and of course build military units which you will then use to...

4. eXterminate: ...destroy everyone else and win the game.

Canonical entries in the 4X genre are:

Civilization
Master of Orion
Galactic Civilizations
Empire Deluxe
And on and on.

I didn't think so, but the comparison was so good I couldn't resist the joke.

Is Dune 2 considered to be a 4x game?

Someone recently converted it to flash. You can play it here in your browser for free.

Dune 2 is considered the father of RTS. So not technically 4x, although one could make the case that RTS is just 4x sped way the hell up.

Very cool link, though.
