When I stopped playing a video game
As "server maintenance" tanked the last "When I stopped playing video games thread," I thought I'd resurrect it as I've just purchased two brand new titles:
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream
X-Com: The Bureau
Sure both games will result in me either being annoyed at trying to guess the logic behind a puzzle designed by a programmer who only survived crunch time because he decided to inject caffeine direct into his temples, or pissed off because I took a headshot through a staircase.
Either way, I'll catalog it here for everyone's amusement!

I don't care any more. Five times I have made the deal with the users of this BBS that if they all promised to not edit or delete posts after other people reply, then I'd turn editing back on. EVERY SINGLE TIME, someone then goes and edits their post in the middle of a thread. Usually it is a new guy, like lethargic this last go-around, who didn't know. (Which is understandable since it's not posted anywhere. He is blameless.)RetroRomper wrote:I'd also like to express my extreme satisfaction with being unable to edit both thread titles and posts - keep it classy ICJ!
I am never, ever ever ever ever turning editing on again, ever, ever.

Editing should never be turned on anywhere ever. If you can't bother to think about what you're typing and perhaps even PROOFREAD it you do not need to speak in a public forum.
If your ideas mean so little to you that you can't be bothered to get them right, why should I care about reading them? Also it is completely chickenshit to go back and try to hide your mistakes after you get called on them.

Wait a minute. Hold on. I didn't pay enough attention to this.Ice Cream Jonsey wrote: I don't care any more. I did NOT go back and edit or delete something after other people replied. No, sir. Did not happen. If there had been a reply I would not have deleted it because deleting it after somebody had already quoted it would make no sense.
Like I told you before, the ONLY reason I attacked CO the way I did was because I 100% thought it was pinback using a different name because attacking each other is what pinback and I do.
When I came back later and re-read my post and thought about it, it occurred to me that I was wrong. And if it wasn't pinback, calling CO a jizzbucket seemed uncalled for. (As annoying as he was, he didn't reach pinback level.) So I thought it was better to remove the post in an effort to diffuse the situation before it got out of hand and avoid some pointless political argument. I left and hours later came back to find his reply. I assume he just happened to be replying already at the exact same moment.
The whole point was trying to cut off the situation before it got going. If his reply had been up then the situation was already full bore and there'd be no reason to delete it.

BACK ON TOPIC!
Star Command: neat and fun iOS / Android space game in the vein of FTL (you command a starship and crew, upgrade it, crew earns exp while you dare missions, etc).
When I stopped playing: when it became obvious that the game is fundamentally broken. To win, all you need to do is heavily defend with three or four security / keep two engineers to repair the weapon rooms. Though the ship will take heavy fire, the enemy will be long dead before they push your life down enough to destroy it.

Star Commander isn't "pay to play" though, its issue is that there are a few specific strats. that completely bypass 90% of the game mechanics including a situation in which you lose.
GameLoft, Zynga, EA, PopCap (sadly) are the companies trying to exploit the ingame purchase / freemium systems. Everyone else is just along for the ride.

Star Wars: The Old Republic was my MMO of choice. I had no intention of ever leaving it. When they offered their "free to play" model I decided I'd give it a shot to save money. I logged in on my new F2P account and saw my character had a stupid helmet on. I tried to turn it off and couldn't. On the "free" version you have to pay a dollar to take your helmet off. I quit and never went back.

Bought F.E.A.R as part of the Humble (No Longer Indie) Bundle and..... Stopped playing at the first "guess the developer logic" puzzle since the game had already thrown at least four boogie man in the shadows scares at me.
Would anyone want to sell me on why I should play F.E.A.R? I wanted to enjoy it, but its just... Ugh.

I find the majority of first person shooters from that era are really hard to go back and play these days. Any FPS from the early 2000s I either find too ugly looking to play, too frustrating, or the shooting mechanics feel archaic.
I loved Halo. I went back and tried to play that when the Anniversary Edition came out and I couldn't stand it. I spent more time being frustrated than anything else. Design decisions that felt normal and familiar back then now come off as puzzling and annoying. I asked myself many times HOW DID YOU EVER LIVE THROUGH THIS??
I've went back and played other shooters from that period and they're just awful. I'm afraid to go back and play MoH Allied Assault because I don't want to think that game I wasted so many hours on sucked.
Tomorrow I'm going to start playing Rainbow Six Vegas again. I loved that game too. I hope it doesn't suck.

Well, it took 45 minutes for me to quit Rainbow Six Vegas. OMG it's terrible. I had a bad feeling when I could barely read the writing on the loading screens. The graphics are so muddy and terrible that it's unplayable. I can't believe this was a game made for this gen. It looks like last gen. The hud is barely readable. You can't make out the enemies because they all blend into the background. And playing shooters on PS3 is always terrible because they don't use the trigger buttons to shoot. I'm constantly pulling the trigger to shoot and instead tossing grenades and getting shot like an idiot.
I officially gave up when I died the first time and the checkpoint was an area I passed 20 minutes previously.
